“For we are saying faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it credited? Being in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. And he received the SIGN of circumcision, a SEAL of the RIGHTEOUSNESS of the FAITH that he had while in the uncircumcision.” Romans 4:9-11.
Introduction
In a previous study titled, “A Living Soul & Life-Giving Spirit!” We addressed the fundamental concept of what mankind was created to be in Adam, by contrasting it against what mankind gets to become in Christ. The issue of the NATURE of the creation of mankind is a ROOT CAUSE that has obscured our understanding of many things, especially of the Judgements of God. That is, even though we have a clear understanding of salvation by Grace through Faith, yet we do not have a clear grasp of the process by which we become a New Creation. So, we have a varied interpretation of what it means to be Born Again, and because we do not know what we were, we are open to entertain theological concepts that are faulty. For example, Christianity in general has taken our deliverance from sin and death to be an automatic inheritance of the kingdom of God, solely based on the wrong assumption that mankind that was created spirit, is REBORN to be a new spirit. The consequence of which is that, we fail to understand our responsibility, and the various ways by which MANY may fall from the truth, EVEN though their sins are forgiven. So, the main objective of this study is to address this fundamental change of nature, through the perspective of the Circumcision of Christ, that is Water Baptism.
One of the main consequences of our failure to understand the true nature of mankind’s original creation is that we have failed to identify the place of our CAPTIVITY. The basic underlining concept being, if we believe mankind was created spirit, then his fall in the Garden of Eden MUST result in him being dead in spirit. Therefore, we ascribe spiritual deadness to be the answer for the condition of the human race. However, if mankind was created to be a living Soul, then his fall was according to the natural, that is, it is his BODY that died on the account of sin. Therefore, the Body of Sin to which his soul was bound is the answer for the condition of the human race. Now, the great majority of the Church ascribe to the former point of view, the consequence of which is that we have misdiagnosed our condition. As a result we have NOT given due regard to the Circumcision of Christ, which is meant to be the expression of our deliverance. Consider, what need does a spirit that is reborn have to be Baptised with Water? As a result, water baptism is brought down to a mere Christian ritual of no spiritual significance, yet, we do not think the same way about the practice of the Lord’s Supper. The strange thing is, if we have understood the Lord’s Supper, we would have understood Water Baptism, because both practices declare to us the SAME undeniable fact, that is the Lord’s Death, which is in respect to body and soul. [1 Corinthians 11:26.]
Seal of Righteousness
Paul, through his various letters has sought to weave a thread that closely binds us to Abraham. Through which, Abraham is portrayed to us as an example of the complete picture of SALVATION. And we, having the same faith as Abraham are called his SEED, as Paul says, “Therefore it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, for the promise to be sure to all the seed, not only to that of the Law, but also to that of the FAITH of Abraham, who is the FATHER of us of all—” Romans 4:16. And again, “Know then that those of FAITH, these are SONS of Abraham.” Galatians 4:7. Now, it is on the basis of this truth that we examine the application of the Covenant of Circumcision, which God gave to Abraham to be a SEAL of Righteousness of faith. The implication being, to us who are the SEED of Abraham, the parallel act that simulates the Covenant of Circumcision is given to us in the form of Water Baptism in Christ. As Paul says, “In whom also you were circumcised with the circumcision made without hands in the REMOVAL of the BODY of the FLESH, in the CIRCUMCISION of CHRIST, having been BURIED with Him in BAPTISM, in which also you were raised with Him through the faith of the working of God, the One having raised Him out from the dead.” Colossians 2:11-12. The main point of which is that, as circumcision of the flesh was a seal of righteousness of faith for Abraham, Water Baptism is meant to be the EXACT SAME expression for us.
In respect to which Peter says, “[Water] Baptism now saving you, not a putting away of the filth of flesh, but the demand of a GOOD CONSCIENCE toward God, THROUGH the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 3:21. Now, Righteousness is a GIFT of God that is imparted to us on the account of a GOOD CONSCIENCE, having been reconciled with God through the death of His Son. [Acts 15:8-9.] As Paul says, “To whom [Righteousness] is ABOUT to be credited, to those believing on the One having raised Jesus our Lord out from the dead, who was delivered over for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.” Romans 4:23-25. Here, it is important to make a CLEAR distinction between the DEATH of the Lord that serves to purify our conscience from dead works in the forgiveness of sins, and that of His LIFE, in the giving of the Gift of righteousness through the Person of the Holy Spirit. [Romans 5:17.] And it is in RESPONSE to this new state that we are Baptised in Water, for the righteousness that was imputed to us through faith while we were still UNGODLY, being in the FLESH. As such, through Water Baptism, the ROOT CAUSE of our ungodliness is cut away. For Abraham, one who was in the flesh looking forward to the day of the deliverance of mankind, this was expressed in the cutting away of the foreskin of the flesh, which is a symbolic gesture. However, to us who live in the dispensation of the Spirit, our circumcision is expressed in water baptism, as to be cut away from the body of sin to which we were bound. The important point for us to get hold of is that, the salvation of mankind is INCLUSIVE of Soul, Spirit and Body. And there is significance to this order, the fact that the purification of our Soul precedes that of our spirit being life in righteousness, and our body being washed in water is the clue to the true nature of mankind.
Now, before we go any further, it is important to emphasise, Water Baptism CANNOT be done at infant-hood, since what faith does a baby have in understanding the complexities of being delivered from sin through the Lord Jesus Christ. Christians are NOT born to flesh, but are BORN AGAIN to the Spirit, meaning a PERSONAL response of faith is a PRECONDITION for water baptism. As John says, “But as many as RECEIVED Him, He gave to them authority to be children of God—to those BELIEVING in His name, who were BORN not of blood, nor of will of flesh, nor of will of man, BUT OF GOD.” John 1:12-13. And the Lord Himself said, “The one having BELIEVED and having been BAPTISED will be saved.” Mark 16:16. Water baptism is meant to be a RESPONSE of the one that believed. It is the fact that our conscience is cleansed from sin that requires us to be cut away from the body of our enslavement. The BLOOD precedes the WATER, and DEATH comes before the GRAVE.
Circumcision of Christ
The important point is, the Circumcision of Christ is meant to be an expression for taking part in the Death of the Lord Jesus Christ. As Paul says, “Are you unaware that as many as have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His DEATH? Therefore we were BURIED with Him through BAPTISM into DEATH.” Romans 6:3-4. And as God asked Abraham to cut away the flesh in the expression of righteousness of faith, now in a similar manner, God also asks us to BURY the BODY of sin in Baptism of Water. And Paul describes the reason as, “Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, so that the BODY of sin might be ANNULLED, that we are no longer ENSLAVED to sin.” Romans 6:6. PLEASE NOTE, how Paul DIRECTLY ties sin to our body when describing the place of our enslavement. That is to say, in the Garden of Eden it is the BODY of Adam and Eve that received the spirit of BONDAGE to bring forth DEATH. [Romans 8:15.] And it is for this VERY reason, Paul cried out, “O wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of this BODY of DEATH? Thanks be then to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24-25. The source of our UNGODLINESS was NOT because we were spiritually dead, but because we were held subservient to a BODY that had fallen subject to the Law of Sin, for which the Circumcision of Christ is meant to be the remedy. [Romans 7:13-25.] As Paul says, “Now those of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:24. Death is the ONLY means by which the BODY of sin can be invalidated, since the wages of sin is death. [Romans 6:23.]
The IMPORTANT point we need to understand is that the Lord came to SAVE us both, BODY and SOUL. As such, the Death of the Lord is NOT only for the forgiveness of sins, but an ACTUAL deliverance from the place of our captivity, that is the body of sin and death. As Paul says, “For the one having died has been FREED from sin.” Romans 6:7. This statement is NOT about the forgiveness of sins, but our actual liberty from the power of sin that ruled in our body so that we may live according to the will of God. So, in Romans chapter 6, Paul laboured to explain to us, how through the Baptism in Christ, our Body of Sin is changed to become a MORTAL BODY so that we may offer it to God for righteousness. In respect to which he says, “Therefore do not let sin reign in your MORTAL BODY, in order to obey its desires. Neither yield your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but yield yourselves to God, as living out from the dead, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness.” Romans 6:12-13. We can understand how our SOUL can be purified by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ in the forgiveness of sins. However, we struggle to attribute the deliverance of our BODY from the captivity of sin in the burial of water. Yet, this is the VERY point Paul was making in this chapter. The difference between the Body of Sin and a Mortal Body is the presence of sin that worked to subjugate the SOUL of mankind.
The Inward Man
One of the consequences of our misunderstanding of what mankind was originally created to be is that, when we speak of the INWARD Man we think it is referring to the spirit of mankind. So, when we encounter a verse that states, “And you, being DEAD in your trespasses and sins— in which once you walked according to the age of this world.” We automatically assume it is referring to our dead spirit, but this is VERY WRONG. The first and obvious point is that, the rest of the verse describes the cause for our present state being the spirit of the power of the air, saying, “According to the ruler of the authority of the air, the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all also once lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the things willed of the flesh and of its thoughts.” Ephesians 2:1-3. That is to say, it is the state of our OUTER Man that was subject to the Law of Sin, which caused our INNER Man to be dead in trespasses and sins, through the acts we were enticed to commit. The effect of which is that, the INNER Man grows corrupt through the deceitful lusts of the flesh. [Ephesians 4:22.]
The Second point is that, Paul himself gives us the definition for the inward man, saying, “Indeed if our outward man is being brought to decay, yet our inner self is being renewed day and day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16. So, when Paul says, the inward man is being RENEWED, he is speaking to the state of our SOUL, that is our MIND, being renewed through the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. [Ephesians 4:23.] And John also says, “Beloved, I pray you to prosper concerning all things and to be in good health, [referring to the outward man,] just as your soul prospers. [referring to the inward man.]” 3 John 1:2. Our identification of the inward man to be the SOUL of mankind is fundamental for us to understand, the bondage we were under in Adam, to that of our liberty in Christ. That is, it is the INNER SELF that is made subject to the BODY in Adam through sin, and to the SPIRIT in Christ through righteousness.
So, when Paul says, “you, being dead in your trespasses and sins,” he is speaking to the state of our inward man which was in hostility towards God, being subject to the flesh. We need to understand, people don’t sin because they have a dead spirit, but because their Soul is BOUND to a body of sin. For which reason Paul said in respect to the Law, “With my MIND I serve the law of God, but with my FLESH the law of sin.” Romans 7:25. Please Note, even when his inward man agrees with God, his body is contrary to this law being under the spirit of bondage, the result of which is that the desires of the body supersede the soul. [Romans 7:21-24.] So, a Soul that is made subject to the Body is described as, “For those being according to flesh MIND the things of the flesh; but those according to Spirit, the things of the Spirit. … because the MIND of the flesh is hostility toward God; for it is not subject to the Law of God, for not even can it be.” Romans 7:5,7. And again, “And you, being once alienated and hostile in mind, in the evil deeds.” Colossians 1:21.
It is from this state of hostility of the mind of the Soul that we are saved through the Gospel. As Peter says, “Having purified your souls in obedience to the truth unto sincere brotherly love, love one another fervently, out of a pure heart, having been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, by the living and abiding word of God.” 1 Peter 1:22-23. Through which, our Soul that was once bound to the body of Sin being made subject to the spirit of bondage, is now set free to be bound to our spirit by the Spirit of God. Which Paul describes as, “In whom you also, having heard the word of truth, the gospel your of salvation, in whom also having believed you were SEALED with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance to the redemption of the acquired possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14. In respect to which Paul again says, “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me FREE from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2. That is to say, my inward man is set free from being bound to my body in which the law of sin and death operated, to be in the spirit through Christ in whom is life on the account of righteousness.
In the Flesh & In the Spirit
The main point for us to understand is that, being “in the flesh,” is describing the state of our inward man that was held in captivity to our BODY through the spirit of bondage. Now, in Christ, our inward man is set free from being in the flesh to be in our SPIRIT, being sealed by the Spirit of God. As Paul says, “Now you are not in flesh but in spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you;” then he says, “But if Christ is in you,the body is indeed dead on account of sin, but the spirit is life on account of righteousness.” Romans 8:9-10. Here, we need to be clear when Paul says, “in the flesh and in the spirit,” he is referring to the triune nature of mankind, by contrasting what we were in Adam to what we become in Christ. So, in Adam our inward man was made subject to our body through the spirit of bondage in sin, that is to be in the flesh. However, in Christ, our inward man is now made subject to our spirit through the Spirit of God in righteousness, that is to be in the spirit. So, when saying, “the body is indeed dead on account of sin,” to that of, “the spirit is life on account of righteousness,” both sides of the statement MUST refer to the nature of mankind. Meaning, just as our BODY died because of the Sin of Adam, now it is our SPIRIT that is life because of the righteousness of Christ.
Please note, we are making the slightest of distinction between our spirit and that of the Spirit of God, for the sake of our understanding, since, “the one being joined to the Lord is one spirit.” 1 Corinthians 6:17. So, if we say, our spirit or the Spirit of God, it is the same thing, because mankind that was created to be flesh can ONLY be in the spirit, on the account of the Spirit of God dwelling in us. And this distinction is proved when Paul later says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness WITH our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:16. Please Note, how both our spirit and the Spirit of God proclaim to us the SAME thing, that is we are the children of God.
Therefore, there are two possible states for mankind, one that is bound to the body through sin to be the son of Adam, the other to be bound to the spirit in righteousness through Christ, to be a child of God. And the consequence of this new state is that, the body that once worked to produce death being bound to the spirit of bondage, is now also set free through the Circumcision of Christ. For which reason, the Spirit of God now works to impart LIFE to our MORTAL body to be a vessel of honour, sanctified and useful for every good work. [Romans 8:11, 2 Timothy 2:21.] Please note, when we were in the flesh the spirit of bondage worked in our body to bring forth death through the corruption of our desires. So when Paul says LIFE is now given to our mortal body by the Spirit of God, he is not just referring to health and well-being, but having the desires of our body to be in line with the will and purpose of God, so we may have mastery over our own vessels. [1 Thessalonians 4:3-8, Romans 8:13.] Please note, in saying a Mortal Body, Paul is specifically referring to a BODY Baptised in Water.
The main point is that the transition from being “in the Flesh,” to being “in the Spirit,” can only be achieved through the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. As Peter says, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might bring you to God, having been put to death indeed in the flesh, but having been made alive in the spirit.” 1 Peter 3:18-19. That is to say, when Christ came into the world He was exactly as we were, except for sin. That is, as one whose life is in the blood bound to the flesh. As Paul says, “Since the children have partaken of blood and of flesh, He also likewise took part in the same things.” Hebrews 2:14. However, at death His Soul was separated from His Body, in respect to which David says, “For You will not leave My soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.” Psalm 16:10. That is to say, His Body was in the Grave while His Soul was in the depth of the Earth, from which state He was raised on the third day by the power of God. However, when He was raised, He was no longer considered to be in the flesh, as one whose Soul is bound to the Body, but to the Spirit, through which He became the Head of a New Creation of mankind. As Paul says, “Therefore from now, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have regarded Christ according to flesh, yet now we regard Him thus no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a New Creation. The old things have passed away; behold, the new has come into being.” 2 Corinthians 5:16-17. Consider, why does God want us to know we are no longer to be regarded as flesh, if we were already spirit. And flesh is not some spiritual condition since the example given is the Lord HIMSELF, who came in the likeness of our flesh but became spirit through birth from death. For which reason, Christ is called, “The firstborn of the dead.” Revelation 1:5.
The point is that the death of the Lord Jesus Christ is meant to reflect our own. And the fact Christ was raised from the dead in His Natural Body is meant to be a TESTAMENT that sin is cast away from the BODY. As Paul says, “KNOWING that Christ, having been RAISED up out from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer rules over Him. For that which He died, He died to sin once for all; but that which He lives, He lives to God.” Romans 6:9-10. Christ gave HIS BODY unto death, and it is HIS BODY that is no longer subject to DEATH, since the Soul and Spirit of Christ did NOT have the SLIGHTEST taint of sin, but HIS BODY was made subject to carry the sins of the WORLD. [1 Peter 2:24.] The important point being, Christ saves us both in Soul and Body. And we NEED to understand this, if we are to correctly diagnose the root of our problem, which is the BODY we inherited from Adam, so that we may comprehend what it means to be a New Creation in Christ.
The simple fact is, we do not need to look far and beyond to understand the Circumcision of Christ, or what it means to be Born Again, because Christ Himself is the ANSWER. One is the expression for taking part in His death as to be cut-away from the WORLD, the other is taking part in His Life as to be made the citizen of HEAVEN. And this concept is perfectly illustrated in this one statement, “The first man Adam became into a living soul;” the last Adam into a life-giving spirit.” 1 Corinthians 15:45. That is to say, Christ who came in the likeness of our sinful flesh, that is in the likeness of Adam, gave His body unto death, so that when He was raised, He was raised as a Life Giving Spirit, as One circumcised from the nature of Adam through Death, to be a New Creation in God. However, the issue is that, when we speak of the nature of mankind as spirit, soul and Body, we do NOT seek to distinguish between the saved and unsaved, between those that are still IN ADAM thereby in the flesh, and those that are IN CHRIST thereby in the Spirit. We CANNOT use a general definition for mankind that does NOT account for the New Creation in Christ. As such, Christ in His Heavenly state bears NO ASSOCIATION with Adam, for which reason He is CALLED the Second Man. [1 Corinthians 15:47.] And we need to make this distinction for the sake of those that are in Christ, for them to know where they came from and where they are going.
Saved in Spirit, Soul and Body
So, it is the fact that we are also born from the dead with Him in putting away the body of sin that water baptism holds significance for us. The circumcision of Christ which is the expression of His Death is meant to express a CHANGE in nature from that of a flesh being to that of a spirit. So Paul says, “We were BURIED with Him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised up out from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in NEWNESS of LIFE.” Romans 6:4. And again, “For while we were in the flesh, the passions of sins that were through the Law were at work in our members, to the bringing forth of fruit to death. But now we have been released from the Law, having DIED to that which we were BOUND, in order for us to serve in NEWNESS of the SPIRIT, and not in oldness of the letter.” Romans 7:5-6. Please Note, our SOUL was bound to the Body of Sin in which the passions of sins were at work, meaning, we were in the FLESH. And it is from THIS state we are raised with Christ by the working of God, in order to “walk in the Newness of Life,” and to serve God, “in the Newness of the Spirit.”
And it is in respect to the all encompassing act of salvation in relation to the nature of mankind that John says, “For there are three bearing testimony: the Spirit and the water and the blood— and these are three in one.” 1 John 5:7-8. The Spirit bears witness that we are the children of God. The water bears witness that our body is delivered from the power of sin. And the blood bears witness that our conscience is cleansed in the forgiveness of sins. In which regard Paul also says, “Now may the God of peace Himself SANCTIFY you completely, and may your spirit and soul and body be PRESERVED, entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Consider, the Natural Body that has to do with the present world is included in this statement, as to be kept BLAMELESS. And this natural body is set free from the captivity of sin through water baptism, as our soul is by the blood. As Paul says, “We should draw near with a sincere heart, in full assurance of faith, our hearts having been sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body having been washed with pure water.” Hebrews 10:22. Through which, Paul applies our salvation both to the inward man and the outward man. The implication of which is that there is an expectation to serve God in this new state, which Paul describes saying, “Present your BODIES as a living sacrifice, holy to God, well-pleasing, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind, for you to prove what is the good and well-pleasing and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:1-2. So, we are expected to offer our mortal body to God, as one that is cut away from sin through the baptism of water. The purpose of which Paul describes as saying, “For just as you yielded your members in bondage to impurity and to lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your members in bondage to righteousness unto sanctification.” Romans 6:19.
We end this study by drawing a comparison between Israel and the Church. Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant which I commanded your fathers in the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and do according to all that I command you; so shall you be My people, and I will be your God,’ that I may establish the oath which I have sworn to your fathers, to give them ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ as it is this day.’” Jeremiah 11:3-5. What we need to understand is that, when God brought out Israel from the land of their bondage to bring them to the land of milk and honey, there was no expectation placed on them, except, they were required to apply the blood of the lamb on their houses by faith, so they may escape from the destroyer of the firstborn. [Hebrews 11:28.] However, beyond the Red Sea, having set them free from their bondage, God expected them to obey Him and walk in His ways, for the purpose of the promised inheritance. Their deliverance from Egypt was a finished work, but their inheritance of the promised land was conditioned on their obedience to Him.
And this is what Christians FAIL to understand, the death of the Lord Jesus Christ served to set us free from the kingdom of darkness in the forgiveness of sins. So, on the CROSS, when the Lord cried out, “It is FINISHED,” it is in respect to the Old Nature, that is, the flesh being done away in DEATH. However, the New has now come into being, for which reason He now works through His Spirit to bring us into the promised inheritance. As Paul says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:14. And again, “We were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved in His life!” Romans 5:10. That is, we, having died to sin, are expected to live for righteousness, as new creations of the Spirit. [1 Peter 2:24.] In respect to which Peter says, “Therefore Christ having suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same mind, because the one having suffered in the flesh is done with sin, so as to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer to men’s desires, but to the will of God.” 1 Peter 4:1-2. And this same concept is repeated in every epistles of Paul, in relation to putting off the Old and putting on the New. On which ground Paul STERNLY warns us saying, “For this you know, realizing that any fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous man, who is an idolater, has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.” Ephesians 5:5-7. [1 Corinthians 6:9, Galatians 5:21.]
The overall point is that, it is through the DEATH of the Lord that we are changed from being in the flesh to being in the spirit. So, our soul, having been purified from the condemnation of our evil deeds done in the flesh, we are now EXPECTED to be renewed in the spirit of our mind through the knowledge of God. As Paul says, “You may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding to walk worthily of the Lord: pleasing in all, bringing forth fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:9-10. This takes reading the word of God, and hearing the teaching of sound doctrine, so we may grow from glory to glory by the Spirit of God. [2 Corinthians 3:18.] Through which the spirit of our mind that was once in agreement with the course of the world, is RENEWED to be in alignment with the mind and will of God. And through the Holy Spirit, our MORTAL BODY is given life to be SANCTIFIED and useful for the purposes of God. Therefore, Do NOT neglect Water Baptism through which we offer our body to God!
Christ saves us, Spirit, Soul & Body!
